In 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita a relative of theirs, vowed to develop an arrangement with a group of Lolita supporters known as Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe to transport her to open water eventually. The plan included a facility in Washington's westcoast where she could spend the remaining days, receive human care, and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen will be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home, and would be surrounded by the ocean itself not an empty concrete tank.
